Is Bitget legal in Australia? ASIC alert and AUSTRAC

Published · updated

ASIC published an investor alert on 28 July 2025 warning Australians against Bitget’s unlicensed crypto asset futures. The same alert says Bitget is registered with AUSTRAC and is permitted to offer its exchange services in Australia. We re-read the ASIC page on 31 October 2026. We show no Bitget button on this page.

ASIC’s investor alert on Bitget futures (28 July 2025)

ASIC names BTG Technology Holdings Limited and its related entities (Bitget). It says Bitget does not hold an AFS licence and is not licensed to carry on a financial services business in Australia. For that reason, ASIC says, Bitget may not promote these products to Australian investors. We found no later ASIC action in our check and do not claim there is none.

AUSTRAC registration: what it does and does not cover

ASIC says the AUSTRAC registration permits Bitget to offer its exchange services. Bitget’s licence page lists a digital currency exchange provider registration with AUSTRAC for Australia. That is anti-money-laundering registration. It is not an AFS licence, and it does not cover derivatives. Neither source names the legal entity or a registration number, so we do not either.

Bitget’s own prohibited-countries list and Australia

Australia is not among the 33 codes in the Bitget Prohibited Countries list updated 16 October 2026. Not being on that list does not mean every Bitget product is lawful to offer in Australia, as the ASIC alert shows.

Why we show no Bitget button in Australia

A regulator has warned against part of Bitget’s offer in Australia, and we hold no verified evidence for Bitget in Australia. So this page links to no Bitget sign-up and shows no code. We do not advise using a VPN or another country in a sign-up form.

What the alert says about the risks

ASIC says Australians who invest in unlicensed financial products cannot access important rights and protections under Australian financial services laws, such as internal dispute resolution processes or client money protections. It describes Bitget’s futures as high-risk, leveraged derivatives advertised as “Crypto futures trading” and offered through the Bitget website and app.

ASIC also states that it limits leverage for certain crypto asset derivative products to 2:1, while Bitget’s unlicensed products are available at up to 125:1. At that ratio, ASIC notes, gains and losses are magnified 125 times. We repeat these figures as ASIC published them on 28 July 2025 and have not tested the products ourselves.

What to check before you use any exchange

ASIC’s own checklist is short: is the company licensed, do you understand how the product works, are there signs of a scam, and how would you complain if something went wrong. ASIC points readers to its Professional Registers Search to check whether an entity holds an AFS licence, and to the Moneysmart “Check before you invest” page. This page is not legal or financial advice.
