What the Bank of Tanzania said about cryptocurrencies

The Bank of Tanzania published a “Public Notice on Cryptocurrencies” dated November 2019. In it the central bank describes virtual currencies as “not legally authorized in Tanzania” and as “contrary to existing foreign exchange regulations”. It also states that “the only acceptable and used legal tender in the country is the Tanzanian Shilling”. The notice cites Sections 26 and 27 of the Bank of Tanzania Act, 2006.

We report this as the position of the regulator, in its words. We do not turn it into a verdict of our own, and we do not describe penalties, because the notice does not describe any. We have not reviewed later Bank of Tanzania documents for this page, so the 2019 notice is not the full current position.

Is Tanzania on Binance’s prohibited list?

Binance publishes a List of Prohibited Countries, “Updated - 5 January 2026”. Tanzania is not named on it. Separately, Binance lists Tanzania as “Available” in its list of countries and regions where the Binance App is supported, “updated on August 18, 2026”. The first document covers who may register for an account and use Binance Services; the second covers app support. Neither says what Tanzanian law allows.

An exchange list says where the exchange chooses to offer its service. It does not say what a national regulator allows. For Tanzania the two sources point in different directions: Binance lists the app as available, and the Bank of Tanzania says virtual currencies are not legally authorized. We do not say Binance is banned in Tanzania, because Binance does not say so. We say what each source says and when it said it.

TZS and P2P on Binance: what official pages show

We have not verified, on an official page, whether Binance P2P offers Tanzanian shilling listings or which payment methods they use. These pages depend on the visitor’s location and change often. We make no claim about P2P availability and give no steps for moving money in or out of Tanzania.

Why there is no sign-up button here

We show a sign-up link only where our evidence covers the country and the exchange is available there. For Tanzania the central bank notice says virtual currencies are not legally authorized, so there is no button and no code. Do not use a false country or someone else’s identity to get around a check or restriction.

How we checked

Each source above was opened on 21 October 2026 and is listed with its title, publisher and URL in the page data. The Bank of Tanzania notice and the two Binance documents were read by our product owner on that date and are recorded in our evidence file.
